A documentary narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch

Why would anyone want to live on Mars? First, let’s figure out how to live on Earth.

A feature-length journey from Open Planet Studios into how humanity can move from being merely smart to being truly wise, told through people who are already doing it.

Our species named itself Homo sapiens. The wise human.

We split the atom, read the genome and landed robots on Mars.

And yet we are taking apart the living systems that keep us alive.

The film’s argument is simple. Cleverness built the modern world. Wisdom is knowing how to live inside the world that made us. We have plenty of the first and not yet enough of the second.

To become wise, we have to solve three big puzzles.

The three big puzzles

Value. Food. Feeling.

Puzzle 01

How to value nature

In today’s economy a tree is only worth money once you cut it down. Living nature is invisible to the market.

Pear orchards, China

Where pollinating insects have vanished, farmers climb into the branches and pollinate every blossom by hand with feather dusters.

Elephant country, Africa

Elephants do engineering work for free. They clear, trample and spread seeds, shaping the land and helping it lock carbon into soil and trees.

Nature’s free services, value per year

$100,000,000,000,000

Pollination, carbon capture, clean water and more. The film puts the bill we never pay at around $100 trillion every year.

The shift

Oil Stateslast century → this centuryBio-States

Natural Asset Companies turn living forests, wetlands and reefs into assets with a balance sheet, so a country can grow rich by keeping nature alive instead of extracting it.

Puzzle 02

How to feed the future

We use an area the size of North and South America combined just to raise livestock.

Food is culture, memory and family. Nobody clears a forest out of malice. The film looks for ways to keep what food means to us while working with nature instead of clearing it.

  1. 01
Agroforestry. Shade-loving cacao grown under restored Amazon trees.
  2. 02
Fungi and air proteins. Nutritious protein from mycelium and air, on a tiny fraction of the land.
  3. 03
Eat the invaders. Reef-destroying lionfish turned into gourmet meals.

Puzzle 03

How to feel human

We only thrive when the world around us thrives.

Forest healing, South Korea

Stressed students are prescribed time among the trees, and the forest does what classrooms could not.

Turtles and second chances

Incarcerated men find calm and purpose nursing endangered turtles back to health.

ConcreteSingapore-style

Drag to green the city. In Singapore, hospital wards spill over with plants and wild otters swim the waterways.

Two stories you will not forget

Wisdom already works. Here is the proof.

Ocean revival

Coral jazz

A healthy reef is loud. Snapping shrimp crackle, fish grunt and pop. When a reef bleaches it falls silent, and young fish searching for a home swim straight past. Scientists now play recordings of healthy reefs through underwater speakers, and the sound lures baby fish and coral back to damaged patches.

River revival

The Klamath comes home

For two decades the Yurok people fought to remove four hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River. The dams came down, about 400 miles of river opened up, and Chinook salmon swam home for the first time in over a century.

The four chapters of Earth

We are living through the turn of a page.

Chapter 1

A time before life

Rock, water and weather. A planet waiting.

Chapter 2

Life weaves a web

Life evolves and builds a resilient, interlocking web that recycles everything and wastes nothing.

Chapter 3 You are here

Intelligent life arrives

A clever species spreads everywhere, and its unrestrained impact begins to threaten the web that made it.

Chapter 4

Intelligent life becomes wise

We work with nature as global gardeners and planetary stewards. This chapter is not written yet.
